As I was messing around with my blog today, I realized that it was pretty heavily weighted to my posts on fashion and style. While I do love fashion and style and of course my own jewelry ;), I love many other things as well, including health and nutrition. Mark Sisson, author of the blog called Mark’s Daily Apple and the book “The Primal Blueprint”, posted a blog today called Is Wheat Addictive?. This topic is something near and dear to my heart, something I have struggled with since letting go of grains… my absolute addiction to bread and pasta.
I love the taste, texture, and feeling I get of satiety as I chow down on a big piece of sourdough bread slathered in butter; I DO NOT love what happens within hours of eating that stuff, but that’s a story for another day. When I gave up eating grains, bread and pasta was the hardest thing for me to let go, and I still find that when I am confronted with bread I start to drool like my 16 year old cat.
Back to Mark’s blog… apparently it isn’t chemically addictive, but we all know how attached we can get emotionally to that floury goodness. For me it requires a big commitment and a lot of healthy substitutes to let go of wheat products, and now that it has been awhile, I don’t miss them nearly as much as I did. There are lot’s of great Paleo and Primal recipes out there that we can use to nourish ourselves and make the withdrawal from wheat products less painful.
